Greenstone Wiki

This document explains how to install Greenstone so that you can run it on your own computer. It also describes how to obtain associated software that is freely available—the Apache Webserver and Perl. We have striven to make the installation procedure as simple as it possibly can be.

The software runs on different platforms, and in different configurations. Consequently there are many issues that affect (or might affect) the installation procedure. Section versions_of_greenstone mentions some questions that you will need to consider before installing Greenstone. Section installation_procedure details the installation procedure for all the different versions; you need only read the part that relates to your operating system. Section greenstone_collections describes the demonstration digital library collections that are included in the distribution. Section setting_up_webserver explains how to set up common webservers, Apache and Microsoft PWS/IIS, to work with Greenstone. Section configuring_your_site describes various Greenstone configuration options, and Section personalizing shows how to make a personalized home page for your digital library installation. Finally, an Appendix appendix_associated_software lists pieces of associated software and how to obtain them.
